Near dry milling produces dry chips and is the way forward being discovered by many customers. No Mess, eliminates ALL OH&S issues for ever. There are many benefits to be gained by employing the Unist “Near Dry Machining” mist system.

In short, the benefits of Unist Coolube® with MQL are:

  1. Significantly increases blade and tool life.
  2. A cost effective conversion for all machine types.
  3. No waste – kind to the environment and no wasting money either More economical in the long run – using Coolube® preserves machine parts for longer and prevents rusting
  4. Clean – no more messy slip hazards from excess coolant oozing down machines and walk ways
  5. The MQL system dispenses precisely the amount of Coolube® needed. No more, and no less.
  6. Better for machine operators – no more dermatitis caused by skin contact with coolants.
  7. Coolube does not oxidise or go sticky.

Nowadays, many manufacturers are under pressure to “go green”. Unist Coolube® is one of the most advanced metalworking fluids available today. Implementing Minimum Quantity Lubrication (M.Q.L.), a no-waste dispensing system, with Unist Coolube® is an easy step to limit the environmental footprint of your manufacturing operation.

MQL is the process of applying minute amounts of high-quality metalworking fluid lubricant directly to the cutting tool or work piece interface instead of using traditional flood coolants. It minimises your environmental impact by significantly reducing fluid usage and eliminating the need for coolant treatment and disposal.

These benefits are multiplied further when using 100% biodegradable Coolube® lubricants, *that is*, metalworking fluids which are formulated from renewable plant-based oils. When considering these facts, along with the performance benefits of Coolube® and MQL, it becomes obvious that this is the most advanced and responsible answer to running metal cutting and metal forming equipment.

Using the right lubricant is very important in MQL applications. The perfect lubricant will adhere to the surface of the tool and provide a thin, low friction barrier between the cutting tool and work piece. Studies have shown that Coolube® has superior properties, which make it an ideal lubricant.

Coolube’s® polar properties create a strong consistent bond between Coolube® and metallic surfaces. This creates an even, strong, and durable layer of lubrication. Coolube® reduces friction 50% better than typical mineral oils preventing heat build-up and resulting in longer tool life and a superior cut finish.

At Unist, we’ve been manufacturing green products long before the hype. Since 1957 to be exact.

With our recent USDA BioPreferred Program certification, everyone can see just how green our lubricant products are. These are the same non-toxic, environmentally friendly, green products we’ve been touting for years.

Nothing has changed but the USDA’s certification of our bio-based content through independent laboratory testing.

Unist Coolube® 2210 and 2210EP are both USDA BioPreferred products and are tested and certified biobased products. Coolube® 2210 is certified biobased with a renewable, biobased content of 93%. Coolube® 2210EP is a certified lubricant with a biobased content of 92%.This reinforces what we’ve know about Coolube all along: it’s made from natural and renewable plant-based materials.

They’re still the same great lubricants that thousands of metalworkers have come to love and rely on for improved cut quality and tool life. They just have new USDA feathers in their caps!

Unist Coolube can be used in a manual situation as well as the more common auto situation. With this set up we drilled some 20 holes before the slugger became blunt. All the time the slugger drill remained cool because of the Coolube reducing the friction therefore reducing the heat. The Revolution uses our patent-pending MQL technology to integrate seamlessly with CNC machines. The system can be configured with one or two oil/air outputs which can be used for either external spray nozzles or through-the-spindle lubrication. The output volume of the Revolution can be tailored to each tool in a machine directly from the CNC program, allowing for optimization of each machining process. Additionally, the Revolution includes an optional pulsed Air Blow-off Nozzle for removing chips in difficult operation like pocket milling. This system was developed specifically for OEM installation on CNC machines, but it can also easily be retrofitted on most existing machines with available M-code outputs.

Vegetable lubricants may be refined from every seed and “nut” known to man. Every seed has its own particular set of chemicals and properties. Unist Coolube products 2210 and 2210EP are formulated from cosmetic grade raw materials, the end product is non-flammable, non-toxic and does not oxidise ( evaporate) like many other cutting oils.

Metal cutting and metal working has traditionally used metal cutting fluids that are commonly known as coolant, machine coolant, machining coolant, machine oil, cutting fluids or cutting oil, these oils are mineral based and are derived from crude oil making them a petrochemical product.

While machine coolants have traditionally been used almost exclusively in machining and metal cutting operations, the concept of minimum-quantity lubrication has been steadily gaining momentum during the last several years.

MQL, also known as near dry machining, dry machining or near dry which replaces machining coolant with a minute amount of high-efficiency lubricant applied precisely to the cutting tool/workpiece interface. The spray lubrication systems have proven effective for machining all nonferrous metals and most grades of steel.

The most common lubricants for this process are biodegradable vegetable oil of which the Unist Coolube products belong too. This product is derived from cosmetic grade raw materials, which, because of their polarity, are known for their extensive friction-reducing properties.

Unlike mineral-based and synthetic fluids, vegetable based fluids are developed in the presence of oxygen, which causes them to organize and align better as they bond with the surface of metals, providing superior lubricity. These fluids, when properly applied, via a mist, oil mist or spray lubrication system significantly reduce the friction and corresponding heat created when cut metal before breaking off and becoming a chip.

Reducing that friction not only extends tool life, can increase feed rate and cutting speeds but also eliminates the need for cooling the tool with flood coolant. Additionally, the amount of fluid used is often less than 80ml per shift, which is either consumed in the cut or remains as a light film on the part and chips.

The use of fluids and lubricants to reduce friction and to cool and protect machines and components during cutting and forming presents significant challenges for manufacturers. Environmental concerns have added new chapters to the situation. In the current social and political setting, a great deal of emphasis is placed on environmental stewardship. As government regulation continues to increase, the cost of complying with environmental guidelines impacts overall manufacturing costs.

In an already competitive manufacturing landscape, companies need to identify and bookmark ways to reduce excess costs wherever possible. It’s no mystery that industrial lubrication just may be the low-hanging fruit for achieving considerable cost reduction, as well as to engage in environmental stewardship.

For most manufacturers, the purchase, handling, application, cleaning, maintenance, and disposal of fluids and lubricants can be 10% of total manufacturing costs, conservatively. Upon closer evaluation, many companies may conclude that they actually have nearly 20% of their operational costs bound up in these processes.

In a business climate of thinning margins, it may make sense to perform due diligence on processes with this degree of importance. Yet the time spent on lubrication-related decisions, from the early product design phase to shop floor execution and management, is often cursory, at best.

Large scale reduction in fluid usage is  being accomplished through Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL), also known as Near Dry Machining (NDM).

By adding MQL systems to CNC machines and selecting appropriate tooling and processes, MQL is capable of creating significant economies and process improvements in metal removal operations, helping both the environment and the bottom line. In the same way processes are determined for flood cooling operations, there are multiple factors to be evaluated to create an optimum MQL process combination.

Speeds, feeds, materials used, tool design, fluid types, and chip evacuation are among the most important considerations. There are some basic usage design characteristics which result in successful MQL integration.
