Watch how we drill 25 mm diameter holes through toughened steel tube with a wall thickness of 5 mm, the hole is drilled through both walls.

To use traditional coolant would have made an absolute intolerable mess, with coolant running down the tube creating a safety hazard and customer quality issues. The manufacturer here decided to apply Unist’s “Near Dry Drilling” technology, through spindle MQL (minimum quantity lubrication). The drilling cell incorporates two Unist Tornado units that send atomized oil particles down through the drive motor spindle and then through the drill  exiting at the drill tips.

No Mess, Dry chips, extended tool life and no thermal cracking of the carbide tips are just a few of the many benefits gained by employing today’s technology to steel drilling applications. This system runs on Coolube 2210EP at an oil consumption rate of 20 ml per drilling hour.

Unist only uses the finest material in our pumps: Stainless Steel, Brass, Aircraft grade aluminium and Viton for the seals, which makes the pumps able to withstand the most arduous environments. Further to this, Unist machines to the closest tolerances for all the components that make up our pumps – this this how we can confidently offer our Life Time Warranty.

Unist Australia is proud to offer a lifetime warranty on the positive displacement pumps in our Uni-Max systems when Coolube products are exclusively used. To receive this warranty service you must use solely Unist Coolube products and must register for the lifetime warranty by sending in the attached warranty card.

Cleaning residual Coolube from parts

In most cases there should be little if any Coolube left on the part.  If the part has much oil on it, it may be an indication which means the MQL spray needs adjusting. But in the cases where over spray is unavoidable, or there can be no oil on the part at all, Coolube is easy to wash off.

Coolube is oil, so a simple alkaline based detergent is sufficient for cleaning.  Alkaline cleaners are commonly used for cleaning metal and are designed to remove grease and oils. Dish soaps are examples of mild alkaline cleansers that would well work with Coolube, as would most other alkaline based industrial detergents that may already be available in your shop.

Article written by Production Machining’s Senior Editor, Chris Felix

Machining generates heat, and flood coolant is the common method to alleviate this heat. But flood coolant is a brute force solution that raises a host of issues of its own. Large quantities of coolant require specialized equipment to circulate, filter and test, and the purchase, maintenance and operation of this equipment can be expensive. The use of coolant may also cause thermal shock to carbide tools, resulting in microscopic cracks that weaken the tool and can ultimately lead to tool failure. Water-based coolants are also susceptible to bacterial growth. Biocides help with this issue, but who wants to breathe these biocides as they and the coolant are projected into the air during the cutting process? The fluid also often ends up in the wrong places, such as on floors, equipment and machine operators.

What if there was another way? While flooding the cutting zone with coolant may eliminate the symptoms of the problem (the heat), it does not address one of the main causes of the heat: friction.

The customer had been machining this Nickle Alloy dry (No Coolant) because to add coolant to the process would have meant mess everywhere, a cost the customer wasn’t prepared to tolerate.

Unist was approached to see if we could improve the tool life as this was a major cost to the company, who was looking to make saving in a tough environment. Some figures to date are that a job that used 300 carbide tips to complete the machining operation was reduced to 30. All this was achieved using a single nozzle Coolubricator and Unist Coolube 2210EP at a rate of 20ml per hour.

Nowadays, many manufacturers are under pressure to “go green”. Unist Coolube® is one of the most advanced metalworking fluids available today. Implementing Minimum Quantity Lubrication (M.Q.L.), a no-waste dispensing system, with Unist Coolube® is an easy step to limit the environmental footprint of your manufacturing operation.

MQL is the process of applying minute amounts of high-quality metalworking fluid lubricant directly to the cutting tool or work piece interface instead of using traditional flood coolants. It minimises your environmental impact by significantly reducing fluid usage and eliminating the need for coolant treatment and disposal.

These benefits are multiplied further when using 100% biodegradable Coolube® lubricants, *that is*, metalworking fluids which are formulated from renewable plant-based oils. When considering these facts, along with the performance benefits of Coolube® and MQL, it becomes obvious that this is the most advanced and responsible answer to running metal cutting and metal forming equipment.

Using the right lubricant is very important in MQL applications. The perfect lubricant will adhere to the surface of the tool and provide a thin, low friction barrier between the cutting tool and work piece. Studies have shown that Coolube® has superior properties, which make it an ideal lubricant.
Coolube’s® polar properties create a strong consistent bond between Coolube® and metallic surfaces. This creates an even, strong, and durable layer of lubrication. Coolube® reduces friction 50% better than typical mineral oils preventing heat build-up and resulting in longer tool life and a superior cut finish.

At Unist, we’ve been manufacturing green products long before the hype. Since 1957 to be exact.
With our recent USDA BioPreferred Program certification, everyone can see just how green our lubricant products are. These are the same non-toxic, environmentally friendly, green products we’ve been touting for years.
Nothing has changed but the USDA’s certification of our bio-based content through independent laboratory testing.

Unist Coolube® 2210 and 2210EP are both USDA BioPreferred products and are tested and certified biobased products. Coolube® 2210 is certified biobased with a renewable, biobased content of 93%. Coolube® 2210EP is a certified lubricant with a biobased content of 92%.This reinforces what we’ve know about Coolube all along:
it’s made from natural and renewable plant-based materials.

They’re still the same great lubricants that thousands of metalworkers have come to love and rely on
for improved cut quality and tool life. They just have new USDA feathers in their caps!

In short, the benefits of Unist Coolube® with MQL are:

  1. Significantly increases blade and tool life.
  2. A cost effective conversion for all machine types.
  3. No waste – kind to the environment and no wasting money either More economical in the long run – using Coolube® preserves machine parts for longer and prevents rusting
  4. Clean – no more messy slip hazards from excess coolant oozing down machines and walk ways
  5. The MQL system dispenses precisely the amount of Coolube® needed. No more, and no less.
  6. Better for machine operators – no more dermatitis caused by skin contact with coolants.
  7. Coolube does not oxidise or go sticky.

Watch how we have applied Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) to a high production vertical machining center. Many benefits are to be realized by replacing your flood coolant with an MQL further more this does not have to be an expensive exercise. This short video shows a two nozzle Unist Coolubricator applying micro oil droplets to the tool and cutting areas externally.
Don’t let the competition have the cutting edge on your machining operations, stop wasting money and call John Barker today to discuss how we can make MQL work for you.
